Pirates of the Caribbean 2 trailer
In the Pirates of the Caribbean 2 trailer the transition that is mainly used is fade to black. This shows a sense of magic and mystery as it is more complex than a straight cut. It also contrasts with straight cuts that are typically used to show reality. There is an establishing shot in the trailer, this sets the dark, scary scene of the boat and gives the trailer an automatic dark feel. There is also a high angle shot of people on boats. The only light in this shot is the lights on the boat, the water also looks really dark. This is to give a sense of mystery as no one knows what could be hiding in the water. The high angle shot also shows someone has power over the people in the boats. There is a close up of Jack Sparrow's face when his hand starts to go black, this shows in detail his scared facial expression, but also adds a sense of comedy to the trailer as his facial expression could also be seen as comical. There is a mid shot of Jack Sparrow running, this shows the audience what he is wearing and the background, so they can see the situation he is in. It also shows his body movements so the audience can tell what he is feeling. There is a slight close up of the kiss which shows it in some detail. This adds another factor to the film so people know it has more aspects to it than just scary and comedy. The non-diegetic sound of the song at the beginning immeditatly adds a scary feel to the trailer, it also makes the trailer easy to recognise as it is a song about pirates and Pirates of the Caribbean is a well known pirate movie. The non-diegetic sound of lightning going on throughout the trailer makes the film feel dark and as if it's a place where nothing bright and happy happens. The diegetic sound of Jack Sparrow's voice then contrasts this as his voice is in a comical tone. When he screams it also seems comical as you would not expect a pirate to scream. The diegetic sound of the voice near the beginning adds tension to the trailer as the voice is deep and the audience want to find out who he is. The feeling of tension is then added by the music building up, this prepares the audience for something big and makes them want to know the end of the film. The lighting in this film trailer is mostly dark which shows the film is of a dark genre, despite this it is does light sunny bits which shows the film also has a happy, comical side to it. The costumes that are worn are quite dark, this shows that the film is about a dark group of people who are not interested in their appearance as much as other things. The beach contrasts from the rest of the trailer as it is sunny and gives the film a comical, lively feel. It also contrasts with the costumes of the people who are on the beach because pirates are usually stereotyped to be in dark places. The boys with the paint on their faces also adds to the effect of comedy as it is bright paint and shows they are not dark characters like a majority of the others. The target audience for this film is older children, it meets the target audience because it is a lively trailer with catchy music, and it also has parts for children to laugh at so they would remember it. The conclusions I have drawn from this analysis are that appearance is important as the costumes of the people in this trailer are one of the most rememberable things about it. It has also re-enforced the idea that music is important as catchy music means people remember it more.
