Pirates of the Caribbean 2 magazine cover

The Pirates of the Caribbean 2 cover by Empire meets the conventions of magazine covers because it has a masthead. The masthead is bright red so it stands out against the white background. Red could have connotations of blood and death as the main article in the magazine is about pirates. The image overlaps the masthead, which takes some attention away from the masthead. There is also a cover line at the bottom of the page as it says 'pirates 2'. This is not a very detailed cover line as it gives not much information about the article, except that it is about the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The magazine cover also has a left-hand third about different things in the magazine. This lists the top 5 things in the magazine, so the audience know what other things will be included in the magazine. There is also information on the right hand side which makes the magazine look very packed. There is a plug too because the front cover has more information on other articles than it does about Pirates of the Caribbean, this is because Empire know not everyone will want to read about Pirates of the Caribbean. The colour scheme is simple as it has 3 different colours for the text and then a simple white background. The text is mainly the same font, even though there is a few variations and some text is in capitals to attract more attention to it. The text is also different sizes, and 'pirates 2' is nearly as large as the masthead so it shows the importance of it. The date and price is small by the masthead, this makes the masthead take attention away from it. The magazine cover being packed with writing also takes attention away from it, as the smaller writing goes unnoticed when someone glances at the cover. The barcode at the side also goes unnoticed as it is white and black, and blends in with the white background. The main image on the page overlaps the masthead so it gets the most attention on the page, but it is crowded by writing, so it does not have a big impact like bigger images do. It is a long shot so it shows Johnny Depp's pirate outfit, and this makes the film easily recognisable when someone in glancing at the cover. It appeals to it's target audience(older children or teens) because it has a picture of Johnny Depp wearing a pirate outfit, so the target audience instantly know what movie it is. It also leaves the target audience wondering what is happening as the front cover does not give away anything. The magazine cover links to the poster and trailer because he has a red bandana on in them all, so you instantly know what his typical outfit will be. He also has weapons in them all so it shows the violent side to the film. The conclusions I have drawn from my analysis is that having a simple colour scheme works, and having a white background can be effective. I have also drawn the conclusion that not always having the masthead being completely shown can have a good impact on the audience.
