Year 10 Audience Research

We decided to interview year 10's to widen our research and to know what another age group liked. This helped because we know the different things different age groups liked, and it has helped us decide what appeals most to teenagers. We changed the movie posters and the magazine covers to appeal more to year 10's, but kept the trailers the same as we agreed they appeal to year 8's and year 10's.

Magazine front covers used:

Hellboy 2.

The Hulk.

Inception.

X-Men.

Film posters we used:

Donnie Darko.

Inception.

The Hills Have Eyes 2.

First Meeting

When we had our first meeting we discussed which genre we would like our trailer to be. As a group we decided to do the horror genre, we decided this because we would get the chance to use more effects and sounds and this would help us when editing the film. To help us make a definite decision we watched some trailers as a group of the Horror and Thriller genres. The trailers we watched were The Lovely Bones, One Hour Photo, Hill have Eyes, American Beauty, Last House On The Left, Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows, Inception and Amityville Horror. This helped everyone in the group decide what they wanted in the trailer, and everyone had what camera angles, sounds and edits they wanted in the trailer. We then came together and shared our ideas for out first draft. We then agreed on the ideas we all liked and decided they should be in the trailer. We decided for the first bit of the film it would a girl taking a walk in the woods on her own. We also decided that there would be straight cuts and camera clicking noises at the same time, so it would give the effect of someone taking pictures of the girl. Between each cut we were going to have a screen with text on to inform the audience, and to also build tension. After a few shots of the girl walking around the woods we would have short takes showing different things happening. We spoke about having a hand coming out of the ground in one of these short takes and blood hand prints on the tree, all of these shots would be in the woods at night.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 trailer

In the Pirates of the Caribbean 2 trailer the transition that is mainly used is fade to black. This shows a sense of magic and mystery as it is more complex than a straight cut. It also contrasts with straight cuts that are typically used to show reality. There is an establishing shot in the trailer, this sets the dark, scary scene of the boat and gives the trailer an automatic dark feel. There is also a high angle shot of people on boats. The only light in this shot is the lights on the boat, the water also looks really dark. This is to give a sense of mystery as no one knows what could be hiding in the water. The high angle shot also shows someone has power over the people in the boats. There is a close up of Jack Sparrow's face when his hand starts to go black, this shows in detail his scared facial expression, but also adds a sense of comedy to the trailer as his facial expression could also be seen as comical. There is a mid shot of Jack Sparrow running, this shows the audience what he is wearing and the background, so they can see the situation he is in. It also shows his body movements so the audience can tell what he is feeling. There is a slight close up of the kiss which shows it in some detail. This adds another factor to the film so people know it has more aspects to it than just scary and comedy. The non-diegetic sound of the song at the beginning immeditatly adds a scary feel to the trailer, it also makes the trailer easy to recognise as it is a song about pirates and Pirates of the Caribbean is a well known pirate movie. The non-diegetic sound of lightning going on throughout the trailer makes the film feel dark and as if it's a place where nothing bright and happy happens. The diegetic sound of Jack Sparrow's voice then contrasts this as his voice is in a comical tone. When he screams it also seems comical as you would not expect a pirate to scream. The diegetic sound of the voice near the beginning adds tension to the trailer as the voice is deep and the audience want to find out who he is. The feeling of tension is then added by the music building up, this prepares the audience for something big and makes them want to know the end of the film. The lighting in this film trailer is mostly dark which shows the film is of a dark genre, despite this it is does light sunny bits which shows the film also has a happy, comical side to it. The costumes that are worn are quite dark, this shows that the film is about a dark group of people who are not interested in their appearance as much as other things. The beach contrasts from the rest of the trailer as it is sunny and gives the film a comical, lively feel. It also contrasts with the costumes of the people who are on the beach because pirates are usually stereotyped to be in dark places. The boys with the paint on their faces also adds to the effect of comedy as it is bright paint and shows they are not dark characters like a majority of the others. The target audience for this film is older children, it meets the target audience because it is a lively trailer with catchy music, and it also has parts for children to laugh at so they would remember it. The conclusions I have drawn from this analysis are that appearance is important as the costumes of the people in this trailer are one of the most rememberable things about it. It has also re-enforced the idea that music is important as catchy music means people remember it more.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 movie poster

This movie poster meets the conventions of movie posters because it has the movie name at the bottom of the poster. This means it is not the main attraction as it is not very large. The image is a mid shot and is dark, this represents the darkness surrounding the stereotype of pirates. The movie name is quite detailed and is easily reconisable as it is the second Pirates and the Caribbean. The poster also meets the conventions because it has a large central image. The central image covers most of the page, and as it is the second film the characters are instantly recognised. The picture is very detailed and the weapon Jack Sparrow is holding shows violence and reality for pirates. This movie poster subverts the conventions as it does not have a tag line. This is because it is the second one and does not need a tag line, as everyone already recognises it. There is also no date line, this would not be necessary as people would research the film if they were that interested in it. There is also a billing block, this is so people who are really interested in the production of the film can see in detail who has taken part in it. Also as Disney is in the billing block people would be attracted to it if they like other Disney films. The text colour is mainly white, this contrasts with the dark background and the dark image. This poster appeals to it's target audience(children) as it has a main image and not much writing, so it is easy to understand and look at. It also has the actors names so fans of the actors will be attracted to the movie. The cohesiveness with the trailer is achieved because both of them include weapons and similar outfits to which the actors are wearing in the picture. The trailer also has some dark parts like the background of the poster. The conclusions I have drawn from this analysis are that having a picture that covers most of the page can be effective, and also having a small and detailed movie name can also be effective.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 magazine cover

The Pirates of the Caribbean 2 cover by Empire meets the conventions of magazine covers because it has a masthead. The masthead is bright red so it stands out against the white background. Red could have connotations of blood and death as the main article in the magazine is about pirates. The image overlaps the masthead, which takes some attention away from the masthead. There is also a cover line at the bottom of the page as it says 'pirates 2'. This is not a very detailed cover line as it gives not much information about the article, except that it is about the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The magazine cover also has a left-hand third about different things in the magazine. This lists the top 5 things in the magazine, so the audience know what other things will be included in the magazine. There is also information on the right hand side which makes the magazine look very packed. There is a plug too because the front cover has more information on other articles than it does about Pirates of the Caribbean, this is because Empire know not everyone will want to read about Pirates of the Caribbean. The colour scheme is simple as it has 3 different colours for the text and then a simple white background. The text is mainly the same font, even though there is a few variations and some text is in capitals to attract more attention to it. The text is also different sizes, and 'pirates 2' is nearly as large as the masthead so it shows the importance of it. The date and price is small by the masthead, this makes the masthead take attention away from it. The magazine cover being packed with writing also takes attention away from it, as the smaller writing goes unnoticed when someone glances at the cover. The barcode at the side also goes unnoticed as it is white and black, and blends in with the white background. The main image on the page overlaps the masthead so it gets the most attention on the page, but it is crowded by writing, so it does not have a big impact like bigger images do. It is a long shot so it shows Johnny Depp's pirate outfit, and this makes the film easily recognisable when someone in glancing at the cover. It appeals to it's target audience(older children or teens) because it has a picture of Johnny Depp wearing a pirate outfit, so the target audience instantly know what movie it is. It also leaves the target audience wondering what is happening as the front cover does not give away anything. The magazine cover links to the poster and trailer because he has a red bandana on in them all, so you instantly know what his typical outfit will be. He also has weapons in them all so it shows the violent side to the film. The conclusions I have drawn from my analysis is that having a simple colour scheme works, and having a white background can be effective. I have also drawn the conclusion that not always having the masthead being completely shown can have a good impact on the audience.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie poster

The Charlie and the Chocolate factory movie poster meets the conventions of movie posters because it has a large billing block. This is not very noticeable as it is quite small, but if people were really interested in the film they would read it. Johnny Depp's name is also at the top of the movie poster so it informs the audience on who the main actor is. This adds credit to the movie as if it has famous actors in people are more inclined to see the film. The central image is the biggest thing on the movie poster and makes the poster attractive. The central image takes focus away from the smaller images above it, but the smaller pictures add detail to the film poster. The movie name is inside the central image, and although it is a lot smaller than the central image it is still noticeable as it is colourful compared to the darker central image. This movie poster subverts the conventions of movie posters because it does not have a tag line, but because the film has been made before it does not need one. At the bottom of the poster it has a date line, 'the factory opens July 15th', this is quite small so it not the main attraction on the page. The multi-coloured text of the movie name is in a fancy font, this helps it stand out next to the simpler fonts. The actor name is in capital letters and in a fairly large font, as he is one of the attractions to the film. The writing in the billing block small because it is not an attraction to the film, so the date line underneath it stands out. This movie poster appeals to it's target audience of children because of the brightly coloured background and the large image. The background helps attract the target audience because children would notice bright things easier than things with a lot of writing. The large image helps appeal to it's target audience as children find images more attractive than writing. The cohesiveness with the trailer is achieved as Johnny Depp is wearing the same outfit in both, and both the poster and the trailer are both bright. The actors on the poster are also seen in the trailer, so it shows they have an importance. The conclusions I have drawn from my analysis are that central images are important as they have to be eye-catching. I have also drawn the conclusion that movie name's don't have to be the biggest thing on the page for the movie to be recognisable.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory magazine front cover

I analysed the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory front cover which is on film magazine Total Film. The magazine front cover meets the conventions of magazine covers as it has a large masthead at the top of the front cover. The masthead is the largest writing on the page so it stands out when people glance at the magazine. The masthead is white and red inside the white, which stands out against Johnny Depp's black hat and the green background. The masthead is in capital letters which means it has has a big impact on the audience as it is noticable and attractive. The magazine cover subverts the conventions of magazine front covers as although it has a left hand third, it also has an equal amount of information on the right hand side. This makes the magazine front cover look quite crowded, but it suits the movie as it is not a dramatic movie that needs not much writing to have a dark, serious impact. There is a cover line on the right hand side of the page, where it talks about Johnny Depp being Willy Wonka. This leaves the audience in suspence as they do not know what information the interview will contain, so it makes them want to buy the magazine. At the bottom of the page the second largest writing on the page says "ultimate summer preview". This shows the audience that most of the magazine will be dedicated to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory without them even opening the magazine. There is a plug on the left hand side, this is so the magazine appeals to people who do not like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This is not very noticable compared to the larger writing on the page, but if you were a film fanatic you would notice the plug as you would not just glance at the magazine, you would look at it in detail. There is a puff on the magazine front cover, "the ultimate movie magazine". This is just under the masthead so it is noticable, it is also white which is a contrast with Johnny Depp's hat. The central image on the page is the largest and most noticable thing on the page. This is so the readers automatically know what the main magazine article is about without even looking at the writing. It is also detailed so it stands out on a magazine shelf. The close up of Johnny Depp looks quite serious, but then the bright background shows the audience it is not a serious film. All of the text on the page(except the text in the masthead) is white or silver. This shows the film is not serious as it does not have dark, serious coloured text. The text is also all different sizes, large text highlights the importance of certain text on the page, whereas smaller text isn't as important or noticable. The font of the magazine front cover is in a simple clear font so the readers can easily read it on a magazine stand. The simplicity of it also contrasts with the detailed picture and background. The date and price is barely noticable on the page as although it is white like the other text, it is small and against a light background. When in a shop no one would notice that when glancing at a magazine, so the price wouldn't be their first thought. The barcode is more noticable as it is quite large, it is not the largest thing on the page though so therefore would not get attention by people looking at the magazine. The target audience of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would mostly be children. The magazine cover is detailed and the background is bright so it would get the attention of children. It could also appeal to adults who liked the original one. It attracts them with the large text as well as the large image. The magazine cover links with the movie poster as Johnny Depp is doing the same pose in both. The background on the movie poster is also bright like the background on the magazine cover. It links to the trailer because he is wearing the same outfit in both the magazine cover and the trailer, that shows the magazine cover is realistic. The conclusions i have drawn from this magazine cover is that detailed magazine covers are just as effective as simple ones. I have also drawn the conclusion that having a good central image is important to how attractive the magazine cover is.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory trailer

In the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory trailer the transitions are straight cuts, this is to show the reality of the factory for Willy Wonka. It is also because it is a funny film, so it doesn't need the serious effect fade and dissolves have. There is a high angle shot of an Oompa-Loompa which shows Willy Wonka has power over them, it also shows they are quite important characters to be in the trailer. There is also a low angle of shot of Willy Wonka, which suggests someone looking up at him. This adds to the theme of him having all of the power. There is a close up of one of the mum's who go to the factory, this shows in detail the shock in her face at the factory. This contrasts with when you see a close up of Willy Wonka's face as he looks at the factory as if it is normal. At the beginning there is an establishing shot of inside the factory. This is so from right at the beginning of the trailer it is seen as a bright and unrealistic film to the audience. It also shows the audience straight away what the film is going to be like. There is a long shot of one of the girls and her mum. This shows the audience what type of people are going to the factory, and is also so the audience see their whole bodies so they can see that they're dressed the same. There is another high angle shot of the visitors to the factory, this enforces the idea that Willy Wonka has control over everyone as it is his factory. The non-diegetic sound of the song running throughout the trailer is catchy and would easily get stuck in someone's head, it is also seen a fun song so it would be very attractive to children. The diegetic sound of the rhymne Willy Wonka says is also catchy "chewing gum is really gross, chewing gum i hate the most", this would also get stuck in children's head and they would repeat it. The diegetic sound that used the most is Willy Wonka's voice, this is so people can clearly see who the main character and can see what the character is like. The diegetic sound of the grandad shouting 'yipee' also adds to the fun factor, and gives a sense of what another character is like. The non-diegetic sound of the plug at the end is relevant to the film and another part of the trailer where there is a chocolate river, this gives the audience an idea of what actually happens in the film. The prop of the bright trees and the grass in the chocolate factory show it is fun, this would automatically attract the attention of children. The props of the furniture around the first girl who won the golden ticket gave a stereotypical view of what she was like, and the type of people who would enter the factory. The prop of the medals around the second girl who won a golden ticket added to the view of the winners being rich and competitive. On the other hand, Charlie's costume is simple and shows he is poor, this shows the audience someone who isn't like the other characters, and this shows he is special just by watching the trailer. Willy Wonka's outfit is professional so it shows even though his job may he seen as fun, he does take it seriously. The trailer has writing in the middle such as 'a Tim Burton film, this goes back to the point of the trailer but in a fun way as it has chocolate around it. The target audience for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are children or people who liked the original. It introduces you to some of the characters, so the people who like the original can compare them and see what they like, it also shows you the brightness and fun factor to the chocolate factory so it attracts chidren. I have drawn the conclusion that having non-diegetic sound through a trailer can work, but only for certain types of film. I have also drawn the conclusion that straight cuts have be effective even though they are simple.
